Young Peoples Votes matter a lot

In an unexpected move, the European Commission has turned to pop sensation Taylor Swift to mobilize young voters for the upcoming European Parliament elections in June 2024. This also emphasises the critical role of young Europeans in shaping EU policies and follows up with the European Year of Youth in 2022.

The European Parliament elections often face the challenge of low turnout. However the 2019 European Parliament elections saw a significant boost to about 50%, attributed largely to increased youth participation. Recognizing this trend, four member states—Belgium, Germany, Malta, and Austria—have lowered the voting age to 16 in a bid to invigorate the democratic process.

As Swift’s European tour kicks off in May, there is optimism that the artist, known for her impactful public engagements, would rally young Europeans to make their voices heard in the upcoming elections. The European Commission’s plea reflects a recognition of the influential role celebrities and young people can play in mobilizing their peers and underscores the significance of youth participation in shaping the future of the European Union.

One day will be even more special since Swift is going to perform in Paris on 9th of May – Europe Day!
